Entries open for Apex Extreme

The countdown to this year's Apex Extreme is on! Entries are now open for this year's event and it's expected it will fill up in record time!

We're delighted to confirm that this year we've made space for more teams than ever before to take part. 80 teams of Explorer Scouts and members of the Scout Network will be able to compete in the event which will take place in the Peak District on the weekend of 8th - 10th October 2010.

Even with space for those extra teams we know that the demand for our competitions has grown to such a level that they now generally reach capacity more than a month before the event is due to take place. So many teams are now hoping to take part in what is one of the country's biggest and most exciting competitions that it's turning into a race to even make it onto the confirmed team list!

Make sure your team doesn't miss out. Check out all the details for this year's event, fill in our online entry form and then confirm your place by posting off your cheque to cover your entry fee and any t-shirts you wish to order. Then we'll look forward to seeing you on October 8th! Join the adventure!

John Hall

It is with great sadness that we have today learned that John Hall has passed away. John has been a key member of the Apex team since the beginning, helping and advising with all aspects of the event.

But more than that, John's inspiration and encouragement was behind the Apex Challenge being set up in the first place. His incredible style and passion for adventure encouraged so many of us who now run the competition.

John recently received an MBE for services to Scouting - fitting recognition for a man who devoted his life to inspiring people to take on their next adventure.

Anyone who knew John and his decades of work in Sheffield will be only too aware of the impact he had, and the legacy he has left.

Ideas for other events

Details of another event you might like to take part in have just been added to our Other Events page. We know that literally hundreds of you look forward to our legendary Apex Challenge competitions twice a year, but with another 50 weekends to pack with adventure and excitement we like to recommend other events that we know are great fun to take part in.

The Three Towers Hike is a team-based competition hiking event for Scouts, Explorers and adults, organised by Scouts from Berkshire. It's got four routes of different lengths for different ages (from 25km up to 70km). The event takes place around the footpaths and byways near the Ridgeway in West Berkshire and is normally held in early April.

It's just one of 11 events we've chosen to promote on our site, so if you've not visited the Other Events page then it's worth a look to see if there are some on there near you which you might have missed out on in the past.

As for our next event, expect to hear news in the next few days about when we'll be opening the entries for this autumn's Apex Extreme!

Future event locations announced

Following on from our recent announcement of the dates of the 2011 event dates, we're now ready to confirm where those events will take place.

The Apex Overnight Challenge being held on the weekend of 9th - 10th April 2011 will once again return to Sherwood Pines Forest Park. It's a fantastic location which has worked so well for us in the past that the event is once again taking place there. During 2010 we used a newly enlarged section of the woodland and we've got exciting plans to make even better use of that again next year.

The 2011 Apex Extreme on the weekend of 7th - 9th October will take place at a location in West Yorkshire. We're really excited about this new site for the event which hasn't been used before. It's a great playing area and we're already buzzing with ideas for the event.

Make sure you've got those all-important dates in your diaries and calendars.

But before all that don't forget our next event, the 2010 Apex Extreme, which takes place on the weekend of 8th - 10th October at Gradback Scout Camp in the Peak District. Expect more details about that later this month when online entries will open!
